These are the prompts we use in production at CrayonSnap, written so the output is what a child can actually fill in — pure black outlines on white, closed shapes, printable on letter paper. Copy any of them into ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, or Copilot.
A coloring page is not an illustration. It has one job: every enclosed area must be big enough and clear enough for a crayon. Image models do not assume that, so you have to say it. These six instructions do most of the work — everything after this is just subject matter.

The most common AI failure
This came out with shading and gray areas. Redraw it as pure black outline line art: every region must be either white or bounded by a black line — no gray, no gradients, no cross-hatching, no solid black fills except thin outlines. Keep the same subject and layout.
Gifts, party favors, printable booklets
Generate a set of 10 black and white coloring pages on the theme [THEME], each a different scene and a different difficulty level from toddler-simple to detailed. Consistent bold outline style across all pages, white backgrounds, no shading or gray, no text. Each page printable on 8.5x11.
Three failures account for almost everything people complain about. The first is gray: models are trained on illustrations, so they add shading and cross-hatching unless you ban those words explicitly. A shaded page prints muddy and a child cannot tell which side of a hatched line to fill.
The second is open shapes. If outlines do not close, there is nothing to fill — crayon runs from the hair into the sky. Asking for "closed outlines" fixes most of it. The third is density: an adult-detailed page handed to a four-year-old is abandoned in ninety seconds. Naming the child's age in the prompt is the single highest-leverage word you can add.
Text is the fourth, quieter failure. Models still garble letters, so if you need a name on the page, generate the artwork without text and use a dedicated name page maker instead of asking the model to spell.
Prompts are great when you want an invented subject — a dragon, a rocket, a birthday scene. They are the harder path when you want a specific child, pet, or family photo turned into a page, because you end up iterating on faces. Start with: "Create a black and white coloring page of [SUBJECT] for a [AGE]-year-old. Bold closed outlines, pure white background, no shading, gray, gradients, or text. Printable on 8.5x11 with a margin." Naming the age and banning shading are the two changes that fix most bad output.
Image models default to illustration. Unless you explicitly ban shading, gradients, cross-hatching, and gray fill, they add them. Say "pure black outline line art, no shading, no gray" and re-ask for a redraw if the first result still has tone.
Ask for 8.5x11 (or A4) with a white safe margin, a white background, and no border decorations. Then print with "Fit to page" at default margins. Pure line art needs no color ink at all.
